Text Box: COUNCILMEMBER KOGELNICK
LEAVING TOWN AND COUNCIL
By Carlotta Anderson

Councilmember Robin Kogelnick is moving from Glen Echo this month and her spot on the town council will soon be vacant.
Due to the absence of Mayor Beer and Councilmember Arber from the regular January meeting, the council scheduled a special meeting for Jan. 22 to discuss the issue.
Since a regular election is scheduled for May, and the position would only be vacant a couple months, the council decided not to hold a special election for Ms. Kogelnick’s seat but to include it in the regular election on Monday, May 4.
Candidates for town council should file notice of candidacy at least 20 days prior to the election. It will be necessary for them to specify if they are running for the normal four-year term or for the two years left in Ms. Kogelnick’s term Text Box: 7 CAR BREAK-INS LAST MONTH

A rash of car break-ins in the northeast side of town on New Year’s Day or the next day alarmed Glen Echo residents, who reported the crimes on the town’s yahoo listserv.
Craig Hanna of 30 Wellesley first reported that someone had rummaged through his unlocked car but found little of value. Bonnie Whyte of 39 Wellesley then reported that three of their unlocked family cars had been broken into, with consoles and glove compartments rifled. Similarly, there was little of value except coins, but a GPS was taken from son Kyle’s car. Bonnie reported it to police and J.A. Chabala showed up to make a report and check for fingerprints.
While he was there, Michael Brintnall of 44 Wellesley reported that a GPS had been taken from his car the same night.
The parents of Lindi Scott-Strite of 21 Wellesley, who had parked on the street while visiting, had a GPS, a credit card and a pair of sunglasses taken in the same time period. They also reported it to police.
Renny Springuel then reported that several weeks previously a GPS was stolen from their truck parked on University Ave., very close to the Wellesley Circle break-ins.
Whether you prefer to leave your car unlocked so that a thief doesn’t damage it, or locked in the hope that will protect it from thieves, the important thing is not to leave items of value inside.
