Text Box: COUNCIL DISCUSSES WORK
AT GLEN ECHO PARK
By Dave Chitwood

A substantial amount of work is being performed near the area of the Crystal Pool to reconstruct a large retaining wall adjacent to the caretaker’s cottage. It has necessitated the operation of noisy pile driving equipment and the removal of some trees. Clerk-Treasurer Polak commented at the Oct. town council meeting that she has heard the pile driver all day long.
Councilmember Long, who recently spoke with the park’s Acting Site Manager, Maria Capozzi, mentioned that the removal of various add-ons to the caretaker's cottage during the work had allowed a charming stone building to emerge. She added that the façade of the Crystal Pool has been removed, including the sign. A new façade will be constructed. Although Ms. Long described this as creating "an entry to nowhere," she added that the Partnership would find something to place there.
Mayor Beers commented that it was nearly time to remember to contribute the town's annual donation to the Park. It was unclear if the amount was $1,500 or $2,000.
At the Clara Barton site an underground fuel tank is being removed; a temporary propane tank will be used until another fuel tank is installed adjacent to the house. Ms. Polak, who lives near the Clara Barton House, mentioned that a storage shed or small building recently appeared. She commented that no one asked her about the erection of the shed. Councilmember Matney added that the park has previously indicated that it is not required to hold a hearing when a new structure is built, but sometimes the park elects to do so.
The Oxford Road drainage project was discussed. The project should begin some time in early November and one lane of Oxford Road will be closed during that time. Mayor Beers reported that an asphalt apron will be installed to direct water away from the property of town residents and into the storm drain. She indicated that she would contact Michael Mitchell of the Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation so that the residents can be informed of the specific date the project will begin.

Text Box: ALERT

The ramp from westbound Clara Barton Parkway to the Beltway’s outer loop has reopened. Its closure was part of a $2 million bridge rehabilitation project. Some intermittent closures at off-peak times may still occur because there’s still a little work to be done.
