Text Box: CANAL TRUST SEEKS FUNDS
FOR TOWPATH REPAIR

The C&O Canal Trust has announced a campaign to raise $100,000 to help repair a 125-foot breach in the C&O Canal towpath which occurred Sept. 6 near the parking lot of Old Angler’s Inn.
National Park Service officials conjectured that there might have been cracks in the canal which contributed to damage caused by the heavy rainfall during Tropical Storm Hanna. After the breach, water was drained from the canal into the Potomac River for about seven miles.
NPS says it does not have a large enough budget to cover such a major repair.
The C&O Canal Trust, which was recently founded by Matthew Logan, formerly president of the Potomac Conservancy, is also seeking materials such as soil borings and chain-link fencing as well as help with surveying and tree removal.
The repair could take several years and cost more than $2 million, C&O Canal Superintendent Kevin Brandt told the Gazette.

Text Box: GAZETTE ARTICLE RE TOWN
NO LONGER RELEVANT

Glen Echo was recently listed in the Gazette newspaper as having been cited by the state as one of three municipalities with uninsured bank deposits for the fiscal year ending in 2007. The paper said this was a violation of state law.
The issue is no longer relevant, town council members were told at the October town council meeting, because the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation recently increased the limit from $100,000 to $250,000. The paper reported that Clerk-Treasurer Cathie Polak said the deposit amounts do go over $100,000 occasionally in order to make sure the town has the cash available when a bill comes in. She described to the council the events that occasionally resulted in the $100,000 maximum being exceeded by a few thousand dollars for a short time.

Text Box: PARK PLAYGROUND CLOSED
FOR MONTH’S REHABILITATION

Beginning on Oct. the Glen Echo Park playground area will be closed for rehabilitation, a project which includes the repair of a retaining wall and the installation of benches to provide a seating area in front of the wall.
The work will take approximately a month and the playground should re-open by the end of November. This project is part of a larger rehabilitation project that will later involve replacement of some equipment on the playground.
