Text Box: ARREST MADE IN MURDER AND
HOME INVASION ROBBERIES

Montgomery County Police Chief Tom Manger announced the arrest of the individual responsible for the September 2008 homicide/home invasion robbery of Mary Frances Havenstein and the series of four other home invasions robberies which occurred between Sept. 17, 2007 and May 7, 2008.
Jose Juan Garcia-Perlera, 33, of the 5800 block of 32nd Ave. in Hyattsville, was charged with first-degree murder, four counts of robbery and one count of armed robbery. He is currently being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
At Mr. Garcia-Perlera’s residence, investigators discovered numerous items of evidence from the Havenstein homicide, the Maryland Ave. and Montgomery St. home invasion robberies, and from several thefts from vehicles. Once in custody, a search warrant was obtained to take a DNA sample from Garcia-Perlera. DNA analysts in the Montgomery County Police Crime Laboratory Section working with DNA recovered at the homicide have made a positive match to Text Box: TOWN HALL STILL NEEDS
ADDITIONAL REPAIRS
By Dave Chitwood

Although the town hall painting is complete, the rotted post office sign still needs replacement. Clerk-Treasurer Cathie Polak indicated that the post office lease states that the town is responsible for the maintenance of the exterior of the post office, and because the sign is on the exterior, the town is responsible for the sign. She obtained a bid for a new sign, which was accepted by the town council at its October meeting.
Ms. Polak said that she had also obtained two roof repair bids, one from Katchmark and the other from DBH Construction. The prices varied depending on the length of the warranty. The Katchmark report indicated that a shingled area in the rear of the building should not be shingled and included a supplemental bid for repair of this section.
Because the roof leaks, Mayor Beers indicated that it would be desirable if the repairs were completed before the snow arrived in the winter. Ms. Polak indicated that the work would begin two-to-three weeks after the contract was signed. Council members discussed whether the cupola was the source of the leaks, although a roof specialist recently asserted that it was not the likely source.
The council decided to accept the Katchmark bid, including the additional expenditure to repair the rear area that is currently shingled. The $12,665 motion carried unanimously.
