Text Box: COUNCIL APPROVES FIRST STEP
TO GET TOWN STREET REPAIRS.
By Kathleen Kotcher

Councilmember Robin Kogelnik told the town council last month that because the town is running up on the wintertime deadline for road resurfacing, the believed that portion of the projected street repair work should be delayed until the spring. This would give the town ample opportunity to plan and prepare for the project.
However, Mayor Beers said the State of Maryland is now demanding proof the town is spending the monies received from the Highway Administration and expressed concern that the town would lose the funding if it couldn’t demonstrate an effort to do street repair.
Councilmember Kogelnik is pursuing the possibility of piggybacking on other bids by Montgomery County to have road repair done in surrounding neighborhoods such as Bannockburn.
The mayor asked the council to move forward and approve the proposal from the town’s consulting engineers for the preplanning phase of road repair. She mentioned mounting frustration in the town for the glacial pace at which the process has been proceeding.
The council unanimously approved a $23, 360.00 A. Morton Thomas and Associates proposal for contract documents, the pre-construction survey, procurement and construction administration for the street repair. That only commits the town to getting the drafting specification, gathering bids, and drafting proposals.
Councilmember Eve Arber wanted clarification as to whether the town would own all of the materials produced at the end. She was assured the town would be able to take the information gained in this process to whichever contractor was selected.
The town has budgeted approximately $400,000 for street repairs.
