TO SPEAK AT OPEN HOUSE SEPT. 20

	The annual Fall Lamplight Open House at the Clara Barton National Historic Site on Sept. 20 will feature a reservations-only lecture by Elizabeth Brown Pryor author of “Clara Barton Professional Angel” from 6:00-7:00 p.m
	Ms. Pryor will discuss Clara Barton’s relationship with Frances Gage, a leading reformer, abolitionist, and feminist who encouraged Miss Barton to lend her voice to issues of the time.  Reservations are required (301-320-1410) for the lecture portion of the event due to limited space in the historic house.
	From 7:00-9:00 p.m., with no reservations necessary, the evening’s events will feature on-going ranger- and volunteer-led tours with the ambience of low-level “period lighting,” during which visitors may explore open hallways, hidden closets, and “bandage material” ceiling and wall
construction.  Park rangers will guide visitors through the home while sharing stories of  Miss Barton’s courage and vision, and anecdotes about her life and times. Visitors will be able to learn how Miss Barton used this structure as her home, warehouse, and the first permanent headquarters of
the American Red Cross.

Text Box: COUNTY AGREES TO HELP WITH
STORM DRAIN PROBLEMS IN TOWN

Mayor Debbie Beers  told the council last month that she  attended a last-minute meeting in Bannockburn with Michael Mitchell, senior engineer, storm water management in the county Dept. of Public Works. He spoke of the plans to manage storm water runoff from  across MacArthur Blvd. from Glen Echo. The county plans to clear out the storm drains from one end of Bannockburn to the Cabin John (Union Arch) Bridge.  They are presently choked with weeds.
Plans are also underway to replace the inadequate swale at Annan and Dunrobbin with a hard surface, one which will be better equipped to handle excess rain water. Mr. Mitchell later informed the mayor that he had received funding to repair the area with asphalt or stone.
The mayor said she continued to be supportive of efforts by the town to manage the runoff water from Bannockburn and pledged his support in upcoming projects. The mayor also gave the number for the Division of Operations with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (240-777-6000). The Division of Operations is responsible for the infrastructure of Montgomery County. While she was unsure what they could do specifically for the town, she thought the number could be helpful to council members and concerned citizens.
The mayor later heard from Mr. Mitchell that he was willing to contribute to resurfacing lower Cornell Ave by helping pay for asphalt repairs.  It is not possible to put a new
