Text Box: PARK NEWS

Glen Echo Park site manager Kym Elder will be leaving her post effective Aug. 10 to take a National Park Service position with Ford’s Theater. She informed the council of here decision at its July meeting. Mayor Debbie Beers and Councilmember Nancy Long offered Ms. Elder words of thanks and praise for her service at the park and cooperation with the town during the past few years. Ms. Elder also advised the council that NPS had not yet found a replacement for Regional Director Joe Lawler, who is retiring effective August 1st.

The park playground will be closed for repairs for approximately 30-45 days beginning around Sept. 1. The National Park Service will be installing a new surface for the ground (replacing the wood chips with a more flexible, synthetic substance), and replacing some of the existing equipment.

Park site manager Kym Elder also informed the council that Phase V of the Park’s renovations will begin this fall and will encompass the demolition of the bath house (a small structure at the far end of the playground), and the re-stabilization of the retaining wall and first aid building. NPS is also considering making the old miniature golf course area into a green space or picnic area, and converting the first floor of the Chautauqua Tower into a civil rights museum; both ideas, however, are in the early stages of discussion, and no funds are yet available for these projects.
