Text Box: WELCOME, NEWCOMERS!

It was quite a circuitous route that brought one of newest residents to Glen Echo: Cabin John—Thailand—London—Wales—Glen Echo. Harley Feldbaum finally found his way back to this area when he moved in June with his family to 6004 Bryn Mawr Ave., a location both he and his wife were delighted to find. Although a native Californian, his wife, Nicole Fraser, had the same yen to live in a town with “a village feeling” like Glen Echo after a sojourn in the small town of Bangor, Wales.
The family includes Maddox, 3, born in Wales, and Nora, 1, born in Washington, D.C.
The couple, both scientists, met when they were on scholarships with the Henry Luce Foundation, she in Indonesia, he in Thailand, and traveled through Asia together.
Harley, an epidemiologist and political scientist, then studied for his PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and expects to complete his dissertation by the end of the summer. His interest is in the foreign policy implication of diseases worldwide. He works at the Johns Hopkins SAIS institute on a global health and foreign policy initiative.
Nicole, a paleontologist, attended Smith College and received her PhD from the University of Southern California. She then did post-doctoral work on climate change at the University of Wales in Bangor. She expects to be a stay-at-home mom for the time being.
In Wales, Harley was involved with the Snowdon Mountain Rescue efforts and is a wilderness EMT. Both are enthusiastic scuba divers and Nicole is considering spending some time enjoying that hobby on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Los Angeles this summer, where she can leave the two children with her relatives.

OF WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

Wellesley Circle resident Peter Magrath has been named interim president at West Virginia University in Morgantown. He plans to stay for a limited time only, while working with the trustees to find a permanent replacement for former President Mike Garrison. Mr. Magrath’s wife, Deborah Howell will remain in Glen Echo. They plan to get together on weekends, either in West Virginia or here. He stressed that he is not leaving Glen Echo, where he and his wife have lived since 1992.. “My home is here,” he said. “There is no way I would leave Glen Echo.” He plans to continue working at his present job as senior advisor to the College Board after his period as college president, he said. Ms. Howell will continue as ombudsman for The Washington Post until her contract expires at the end of the year and will then do consulting work for the Newhouse publications.
