Text Box: FOLK FESTIVAL WILL NEED MORE
MONEY TO CONTINUE AT PARK
By Bill Turque

The Washington Folk Festival may have made its last appearance in Glen Echo Park because of continuing financial issues, Council member Nancy Long said at the Town Council's June 9 meeting.
She told the council that the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, which organizes the annual two-day music-and-crafts event, "is having financial problems and there's some question about whether they'll be able to do the festival again." She did not elaborate.
Folklore Society president Charlie Baum confirmed in an interview that the organization will need additional grants and sponsorships to continue. The festival lost money last year and may well be in the same hole when it sorts through the numbers from this year's 28th annual event, which took place May 31-June 1. Severe thunderstorms and high winds tore through the region on Saturday the 31st, most likely driving down that day's attendance. Exact numbers were not yet available, Mr. Baum said..
But weather was not the main issue, he said. "We obviously need to find more grants and other sources of revenue."
One reason, he said, is the rising cost of renting the park from the Glen Echo Partnership, now $10,000 for two days.
The festival currently receives grants from Montgomery County and the Richmond Folk Festival, Mr. Baum said. It also gets in-kind support from WAMU and GEICO, which donates satellite parking. He said the society would discuss the situation at its July board meeting.
Financial and climate issues aside, the festival seemed to unfold smoothly, council members said. There was only one complaint about barricaded streets and another about overflow parking.
