Text Box: 	“The Grateful Shred,” a paper shredding opportunity arranged by the Friends of the Clara Barton Community Center in Cabin John last month was a great success.  It attracted scores of paper shredders and raised over $700 for the center.  Participants were asked to donated $5 per box of paper, or less for smaller amounts and coffee and donuts were available.  All-Shred was hired to provide a mobile shredding truck; the shreds were then baled and sent to paper plants to be recycled.

	After more than four years of the eventually successful attempt to obtain a Special Exception from the county for use of the Sycamore Store property on MacArthur at Walhonding, owners Dean Brenneman and Peter Pagenstecher have discovered that their business has outgrown the property.  To their regret, they say, they have determined that 
they must sell the property instead of using it themselves.  The building and the Sycamore Store sign are both protected now by historic designation, and any future owner will be bound by all the terms of the special exception agreement, including that the building be restricted to professional offices, not general business or retail use.

	The Cabin John Citizens Association last month celebrated the 400th anniversary of Capt. John Smith’s exploration of the Potomac River, which extended through Glen Echo, Cabin John, and up to Great Falls.  There were three slide show presentations—by Andy Rice about Capt. Smith’s explorations; by Richard Cook about the old Cabin John Hotel; and by Judy Welles about her new book, “Cabin

	MacArthur Blvd. was closed for two days between 81st St. and Persimmon Tree Rd. last month due to a downed hickory tree which fell on the 34,000 volt power lines in that area.
