METAL RECYCLING CONTEST

The Scrap Metal Recycling Challenge between Cabin John and Carderock Springs has ended with Cabin John the winner. The event was scheduled to culminate in a Metal Recycling Parade and Celebration on April 27 at the Clara Barton Community Center in Cabin John. Awards were scheduled to be presented to the winning community by Bob Hoyt, director of the county Dept. of Environmental Protection and Councilman Roger Berliner.
While the final total of collected metal was not known by Echo press time, close to fine tons of scrap metal had been recycled as of Apr. 4. A Boy Scout group hauled 1,821 pounds of metal to the county recycling center and MacArthur Park families pulled many kinds of metal from their woods. Organizers of the event were hopeful that neighboring communities would join their Green Neighbors in a similar effort.
Representatives from the two communities gave a presentation at the April 14 town council meeting about metal recycling. Tom Rojas from Cabin John (and brother of town resident Constance Macy) and Marsha Donnelly from Carderock provided details about the metal recycling competition, which was conducted in partnership with the recycling section of the County’s Division of Solid Waste Services, and implored the Town of Glen Echo to get involved.
Mr. Rojas offered to haul away the town’s metal waste if the town were to designate a location for containers (local retailer Duron will provide individual buckets for residents’ use). Ms. Macy attended the meeting, offered to put together a metal recycling program for the town, and to provide details to residents. Among the metal items that can be recycled are bottle caps, jars, lids, nails, screws, nuts and bolts.
