The previous ordinance also permitted non-U.S. citizens to vote in town elections but lacked specifics about what constitutes town residency.  It also permitted registration to vote on the day of the election. 
	In the event the new ordinance is approved at the May meeting, it shall become effective 50 days thereafter, unless a petition for a referendum is received by the town council within 40 days after the approval.  The town will also be required to publish a fair summary of the new law (most likely in the Gazette) if it is approved by the council in May.


Text Box: 	The Glen Echo Town Council unanimously voted at its April 14 meeting to introduce an amendment to its election laws, the purpose of which is to clarify who may vote in town elections.  An amendment must be formally introduced a month before a final vote is taken to enable citizens to familiarize themselves with its substance. The council will officially vote on the Charter Amendment at its May meeting.  
	The proposed new law, which will be distributed to all town residents before the May council meeting, amends Sections 501, 504 and 506 of the Town Charter, and will only affect those residents who are not already registered to vote with either the Montgomery County Board of Elections or the Town of Glen Echo. 
Its amendments provide that any person who is a town resident, but is not a United States citizen, may vote in town elections provided that he or she has registered to vote with the Montgomery County Board of Elections no later than the fifth Monday prior to an election or with the town Clerk-Treasurer no later than the second Monday prior to an election.  All residents who register to vote with the town Clerk-Treasurer shall be required to affirm on the registration application, under penalty of perjury,  that the information provided is true, and that the applicant meets all of the qualifications to become a Text Box: ANNUAL BUDGET HEARING

The town’s annual budget hearing (for the 2008-2009 fiscal year) will be held Tuesday May 27, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in the town office.  Following the hearing, the town council will have a closed meeting to vote on the budget.
