Text Box: CABIN JOHN CELEBRATES
CAPT. JOHN SMITH’S ARRIVAL
By Dave Chitwood

The community of Cabin John will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of the explorations of Capt. John Smith, who sailed up the Potomac River to Little Falls on June 16, 1608 to become the first non-Native American to visit the area.
The founder of Jamestown, Capt. Smith mapped the river near Glen Echo and Cabin John. One of the several versions of the origin of the name “Cabin John” is that it is a variant of “Captain John.”
The “Cabin John History Cookout” will be held on the evening of July 21st at the Clara Barton Community Center. An hour of historical reenactments, speaking and slides on the history of Cabin John and other local communities will follow the cookout. The Citizens Association invited the Glen Echo and Bannockburn communities to contribute to the presentations.
Mayor Debbie Beers commented at the Mar. 10 town council meeting that many of the photographs in Carlotta Anderson’s history of Glen Echo, “Glen Echo: The Remarkable Saga of a Very Small Town,” book would be suitable for such a presentation. Councilmember Steve Matney said that the conversion of these photographs into images suitable for a digitized presentation should be relatively easy, and Ms Anderson added that the book is already in electronic format. They plan to work together on this project.
