Text Box: 	The Bannockburn community is exploring the possibility of setting up some form of support group that would enable long time residents to stay in their homes if incapacitating health problems arise, the Bannockburn Newsletter reports.  Its residents are looking for information, ideas, references and helpers in order to create a kind of “community resource bank” in the spirit of the original goal of the Bannockburn Cooperative.  Its purpose would be to enable families to live out their lives in the community…

	The metal recycling competition is now underway in Cabin John and Carderock.  The two communities are competing to collect the most scrap metal before Apr. 18 in a partnership with the recycling section of the county Division of Solid Waste Services.  Recycling containers for this purpose have been set up in the two communities and were provided at no charge. The community with the most pounds of recycling metals will win awards from the County Executive.  In an article, “Resident’s passion for metal recycling spreads throughout community, the Gazette profiled Cabin John’s Tom Rojas, organizer of the effort and brother of Glen Echo’s Constance Macy. His nephew, Phillip Macy, 6, was shown in a photo handing over a paint can of small scrap metal items he had collected.  A later article in The Washington Post noted that children have been going door-to-door passing out pamphlets supporting the program.  Items accepted include nails, screws, broken scissors, keys and small appliances.

	The newly-formed C&O Canal Trust will kick off its activities with month-long “Canal Pride Days” beginning Apr. 19.  Founded by Matthew Logan, former president of the Potomac Conservancy, its purpose is to raise funds for the C&O Canal National Historical Park and to aid in its maintenance and restoration efforts.  During the “Canal Pride Days” volunteers will paint lockhouses and picnic tables, plant Text Box: trees and flowers, and cut back vegetation in projects geared to all ages.  The park has long relied on volunteer organizations to carry out basic functions, since it operates on roughly 37 cents to the dollar of what it needs to operate fully, according to the Potomac Almanac. 	Adventure Cycling Magazine named the C&O Canal NHP one of the nation’s “Ten Top Touring Areas in North America” in its January 2008 issue. The canal was chosen for spectacular and inspiring scenery and a traffic-free adventure.

AT LOCAL POLLING PLACE

	A total of 964 votes were cast at our local polling place at Bannockburn Elementary School in Maryland’s February 12 primary election for delegates for the November presidential election.
	Of those, 821 votes were for Democratic delegates and 143 for Republican delegates.  Delegates for Sen. Hillary Clinton received 293 votes, and those for Sen. Barack Obama got 516.  Ten votes were cast for four other Democratic candidates; two were for “uncommitted.” 
	On the Republican side, Sen. John McCain received 113 votes, and former governor Mike Huckabee 12.  Alan Keyes got 2, Ron Paul 7, and George Romney 7.
