Text Box: TOWN CHOREOGRAPHER TO
REHEARSE IN TOWN HALL
By Dave Chitwood

Town resident and choreographer Cynthia Word, the Artistic Director of Word/Dance/Theater was granted permission at the Mar. 10 town council meeting to use the town hall for rehearsals on three April Wednesday afternoons. Because each resident is annually allowed three rentals of the hall, the request would account for all of Ms. Word’s 2008 uses. She indicated that if any additional requests would be needed, a class or special performance could be provided for town residents in exchange for use of the hall.
The rehearsals would be in preparation for the dance troupe’s next performance, “Isadora Duncan: An Evening of Music and Dance,” on May 1 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dennis & Phillip Ratner Museum in Bethesda. In response to some concern expressed about excessive noise in the post office below the dance rehearsals, Ms. Word pointed out that the only users would be three shoeless adults.
She also described the philosophy and artistic aims of her group, which focuses on the choreography and philosophy of Isadora Duncan. Two recent performances were at the “Women Who Wow Festival”at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Depending upon the scope and aims of the performance, Ms. Word utilizes as many as five dancers and two actors.
Town Resident Carlotta Anderson referred to Isadora Duncan as the originator of modern dance. She thought that a performance in town would be a valuable event to hold. Councilmember Nancy Long said that such an event would be well suited to the Chautauqua series. Ms. Word stated that Isadora Duncan’s work “was in the style of the Chautauqua movement” and that she would be interested in discussing such an invitation. .
