Mayor Beers said that although a few town residents have maintained that only U.S. citizens should be allowed to vote in town elections, “We’re not going to back up” on letting noncitizens vote. She added that after the town of Takoma Park permitted noncitizen voting, several other local jurisdictions followed a similar course.
Text Box: The Glen Echo Town Council at its March meeting again discussed modifications to the town charter’s provisions concerning town elections. Under consideration were the criteria for eligibility to vote in town elections as well as the cutoff date before an election after which registration would be closed.
At present, any town resident (a somewhat vaguely defined term) may register on the current day of the election.
The amendment would not affect town residents already registered to vote in Montgomery County, since the county’s voter rolls are supplied to the town. However, for people who are not registered in the county, voter applicants may be asked to provide proof of residency, including identification documents, subject to penalty of perjury.
Mayor Debbie Beers said that town residency is an important criterion, as the only people who should be allowed to vote in an election should be those who have an actual stake in the results.

TO BE PRIORITIZED

Councilmember Robin Kogelnik indicated at the Mar 10 town council meeting that a final report from the street survey contractor should be available within a few weeks.
Core samples were removed, curbs and sidewalks were thoroughly examined, and a prioritized listing of the areas most in need of repair has been prepared. Numerous repair options will be presented in the report, together with a proposal for traffic calming devices on University Avenue.
Because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars estimated to complete the repairs, Mayor Beers raised the possibility of performing the needed repairs in phases. Ms. Kogelnik commented that that might raise the total expense because of the added costs of moving heavy equipment into the town more than once.
