Text Box: STILL TIME TO COLLECT NUTS
FOR TREE PLANTING PROGRAM.

The Potomac Conservancy is collecting nuts/acorns for its “Growing Native” program through the first week in November. Since 2001, volunteers have collected more than 94,000 pounds of seeds, generating nearly 6 million seedlings, which were used to help restore native hardwood forests along nearly 800 miles of streamside land. Last year a record 23,000 pounds of seeds were collected, generating 1,040,490 trees.
The tree plantings happen in spring all over the Potomac watershed at different places each year. However, only a small percentage of tree seedlings are given to the Growing Native program for community tree planting events. The other trees are widely distributed to state foresters for restoration projects and to large land owners for riparian tree plants.
If you wish to collect the nuts that have fallen from your trees for this program, you may take them to a drop-off site on the back porch of Lockhouse 8 or at the Locust Grove Nature Center at 7777 Democracy Blvd. right in the parking lot. The nuts/acorns in demand include Black Walnuts, many varieties of oak, Hazelnuts, White Cedar, and others. All nuts/acorsn should be divided according to species into separate labeled bags.
