Text Box: STREET REPAIR PROPOSALS
BEING CONSIDERED
By Tom Helf

The Town Council has received, and is considering, proposals from two engineering companies to formulate a plan to repair the town’s streets, Councilmember Steve Matney reported at the Oct. 8 Town Council meeting.
EBA Engineering proposed conducting a study of the Town’s street repair requirements (including the possible need for traffic calming measures like speed bumps or platforms) for a cost of $14,192.80, which is within the $15,000.00 budget previously approved by the council. If EBA Engineering is selected, the company would charge an additional $12,000.00 to prepare bid packages for the actual repair work it recommends.
 A. Morton Thomas has also submitted a proposal to conduct a study of the Town’s streets at a cost of $9,200.00, but has not yet advised as to the cost of preparing bid packages. Councilmember Matney anticipates having this information in time for the council to make a decision at the November meeting.

LANDSCAPING PLANS

The two town-owned parks located at the north- and south-east corners of University and Princeton Aves.will soon have a new look. The Glen Echo Town Council unanimously approved a landscaping plan at its Oct. 8 meeting.
The plan, submitted by John Shorb Landscaping, Inc., will entail the planting of new trees and shrubs and seek to make the two parks more compatible in appearance. The council also plans to have a plaque located in the park on the southeast corner of University and Princeton to commemorate the gift of this property to the town by the late Shirley Strong.
The re-landscaping of the two parks will cost approximately $20,000.00, a sum that is within the town’s aggregate landscaping budget for this fiscal year, according to Mayor Debbie Beers. It is anticipated, however, that additional monies may need to be found within the overall town budget to fund the town’s customary landscaping needs.
The council anticipates that the town’s regular landscape company, Chapel Valley, may undertake the responsibility of watering the new trees and shrubs to be planted in the parks. Councilmember Nancy Long reported that she researched various State and local grant programs to ascertain whether any might provide a source of funding for the effort, but none were applicable to this particular project.
Councilmember Robin Kogelnik has been tasked with finalizing the landscaping contract with John Shorb Landscaping, Inc., with a goal of having the work start in the late fall.
