Text Box: REPAIRS UNDERWAY
UNDER BRIDGE TO PARK
By Bill Turque

The National Park Service has started repairs on and around the Minnehaha Pedestrian Bridge Entryway to Glen Echo Park. The work will address erosion around a bridge pier and the placement of additional rocks to stabilize the stream bank.
Paths and trails to the creek are closed, but the bridge will remain open during normal operating hours. The work is expected to take about three months to complete, Kym Elder, GEP Site Manager, told the Town Council on Sept. 10.
The most conspicuous sign of the project is the long chain link fence that has been erected to the right of the entryway and the temporary wooden “driveway” from the parking lot to Minnehaha Creek. The road is being built to move construction equipment to the creek and the affected pier, Ms. Elder said.
For the past year, Park Ranger Stan Fowler and a crew of volunteers, including Glen Echo’s Peter Somerville, have been spending weekends moving huge boulders in the stream bed in order to re-direct the water flow away from the pier.

Text Box: DISCOVERY CREEK HAS
NEW PARTNER
By Bill Turque

Although Discovery Creek is now in new hands, it will remain an integral part of the Glen Echo Park experience, according to John Dillow, executive director of Living Classrooms of the National Capitol Region. The non-profit recently announced that it is partnering with Discovery Creek Children’s Museum of Washington.
Living Classrooms runs "learn by doing" educational programs using maritime settings, community revitalization projects and other settings for students from diverse backgrounds.
Mr. Dillow said Discovery Creek was a natural fit as an affiliate. No major changes are contemplated in the immediate term, and the current director of education, Annie A.K. Hanson, will be staying on, he said.
"The whole idea is to help Discovery Creek run more effectively and efficiently," Mr. Dillow told the Town Council at its Sept. 12 meeting.
Mayor Beers told Mr. Dillow that the town would like to see Discovery Creek expand its hours. He replied that Living Classrooms would be exploring that possibility.
