Text Box: COUNCIL WANTS VERIZON
TO EXPLAIN NEW SERVICE
By Jerry Bodlander

The town council plans to ask Verizon to send a representative to a future council meeting. Council members said at their July meeting that they want an explanation of the company’s plan for installing its new FIOS fiber optic service in the town.
Verizon workers told Cathie Polak that the company was planning to bore under Princeton Ave. in order to bring the service to homes across the street from telephone poles. She was told that Montgomery County gave Verizon permission to do this, although, as she pointed out to the workers, the streets don’t belong to the county.
She subsequently called Verizon directly and a letter was sent to the town from Shawn Hutson, the buried service wire supervisor for Verizon FIOS. He wrote that the work would include driveway bores, working in the public utility easement and trenching on the home owner’s property. He further guaranteed that after such boring, the property would be “restored to the same or better condition within six months of work completion.”
Council members want to know why the service cannot be provided by using overhead wires instead of burying them underground.
Text Box: TOWN SEEKS TO CLARIFY STREET
CLOSING FOR A BLOCK PARTY
By Jerry Bodlander

The council decided at its July meeting to ask the town attorney to look into what is necessary to close town streets. The issue is being investigated after complaints about a private block party that was held on Bryn Mawr Ave.
Council members want to know whether town ordinances need to be amended to cover the necessary procedure as well as to make sure liability issues are addressed. They agreed that the ordinances do give the town this authority but that there should be specifics about the requirements for residents to fulfill to request such a closing.
It was suggested that anyone who wants to close a town street would have to make the request to the council at least 30 days head of time. In addition, people who live on the street or others who would be affected by the closure would have to be notified of the plan ahead of time, council members suggested.
