Text Box: PETITIONS FOR SAFE CROSSING
OF MACARTHUR SENT TO COUNTY

Sixty-six signatures from town residents were collected for the petition asking the Montgomery County Department of Public Works and Transportation to install a flashing light at the intersection of Princeton Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. where there is currently only a painted crosswalk. The purpose of this request from the county is to ensure a safe crossing for schoolchildren and others who need to cross MacArthur for bus stops, to shop at the Glen Echo Shopping Center, or to attend the Church of the Redeemer.
The petition noted that the two other communities on the river side of MacArthur Blvd.—Brookmont and Cabin John—have either street lights or stop signs to enable their residents to cross safely.
The petition also pointed out that Mayor Debbie Beers has made a similar request to the county in writing three times since 2000.
The petitions have been sent to Albert Genetti, Director, MCDPWT; Bruce Johnston, Chief of Engineering, MCDPWT; Kyle Liang, MCDPWT; Lt. Ronald Smith, Montgomery County Police Dept.; and Karen B. Williams, Policy Analyst to Councilmember Roger Berliner, Montgomery County Council.
Signatures on the petitions were collected house to house by Nancy Long, Sally McGunnigle, Deborah Sachs, Julia Wilson, and Carlotta Anderson. Not all houses were visited. A petition was also available for signing at the town picnic.

TO SURVEY TOWN STREETS
By Jerry Bodlander

The council has selected EBA Engineering Inc. of Baltimore to conduct a survey of the town’s streets. The $13,000 bid calls for an analysis of 24 core samples from areas in town where the information is most needed.
At its July 9 meeting town council members also approved having the contract go as high as $15,000 after adding some provisions to the contract.
They include traffic calming, and removing one street (Radcliffe Lane) and adding several others (Oberlin, Tulane and Bowdoin) to the survey. Should EBA come back with an amount above $15,000, the council will revisit the issue.
While the lowest bid was from A. Morton Thomas at $9,200 for just four core samples, council member Steve Matney pointed out that the town of Takoma Park was very pleased with EBA’s work on a similar project.
He also felt EBA was more professional in the way it responded to and handled the bid.
