No one could remember a previous run-off election in the town’s 104 year history. “A run-off is pretty rare” in Maryland, according to Tom Reynolds, manager of Research and Information for the Maryland Municipal League, the Gazette said. He counted 25 municipal elections in Maryland this May.
The election was conducted by Susan Grigsby, Supervisor of the Board of Elections, assisted by Lee Clune, Michelle Wells, and Joci Khalifa. Cookies and candy were provided for the enjoyment of the electorate.-
Text Box: An election extraordinary in Glen Echo’s history got front page treatment in the May 18 Gazette newspaper when two candidates for town council got equal votes and a run-off election had to be scheduled.
The election was also notable when 127 voters, more than half the total population, turned out for the run-off election. This included several people who are not registered to vote in Maryland, but are allowed to vote in Glen Echo, where the only requirement is 18 years of age and at least 30 days residence here. The town has 196 registered voters and a current population of 221.
The high turnout was clearly due to the excitement not only of having a contested election, but having one in which Dan Macy and Robin Kogelnik initially received the same number of votes—61. Incumbent Nancy Long was re-elected with 79 votes cast.
The run-off election on May 21, two weeks later, was again very close, with the tally including eight absentee ballots. It was decisive, however, and incumbent councilman Dan Macy was defeated, with 62 votes to Robin Kogelnik’s 65 ballots. “We were all surprised because Dan has done a good job,” election supervisor Susan Grigsby was quoted as saying. “But I think it’s good there’s been competition; it brings a certain accountability to the council.”
Many past elections have had the same number of candidates as there were open seats on the council. The term of service is four years, with two councilmembers being elected Text Box: RUN-OFF FOR TOWN ELECTION MAKES GAZETTE FRONT PAGE
