Text Box: PARK NEWS

The National Park Service is making plans for its centennial celebration in 2016. If approved by Congress, the centennial initiative will provide additional funding to improve services and facilities at parks across the country.
Among the proposals discussed were an exhibit on Glen Echo Park’s civil rights history (to be housed in the recently restored Candy Corner), and the re-furbishing of the barn adjacent to the Clara Barton House as an administrative building and information center (including an ADA-compliant rest room). Although the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture (GEPPAC)’s co-operative agreement (which governs the operations of the Park) does not expire until 2015, efforts are already underway to revise and amend the agreement, according to Glen Echo Park site manager Kym Elder. NPS wants to ensure that it has the authority to supervise future construction projects that take place in the park (which is owned by NPS). Major Beers indicated that the town would also want to ensure that the co-operative agreement reflects the interests of the town and its residents.
