Text Box: LOOkING FOR THE ORIGIN
OF THE NAME CARDEROCK

Bill Feller of Carderock has done some research on the origin of the name of the area in which he lives. He began with the British Embassy, where he was told that although it was a Scottish word, there was no town in Scotland or England with that name.
A friend suggested it might be an Indian name so Mr. Feller spoke to the librarian at the American Indian Museum in D.C. The librarian consulted a book entitled “The Place Names of Maryland,” which stated that “the name is evidently from ‘Carter Rock’ in the Great Falls area.”
Eager to learn more, Mr. Feller found Carderock mentioned several times as early as 1700 in the Maryland Archives Museums in Annapolis and College Park. At the Montgomery County Historical Museum in Rockville, he found in the Census of 1783 that three Carters were living in Montgomery County at that time: Samuel Carter, Daniel Carter, and Thimsey Carter. In the book “Revolutionary Patriots,” he also found several soldiers from Montgomery County named Carter who fought in the Revolutionary War.
On the basis of his research, Mr. Feller believes the name of his community does come from a combination of the name Carter and the word “rock.” However, if anyone has any questions or comments, he would like to hear from them at 301-229-0106.
