DISCUSSIONS STILL UNDERWAY
By Tom Helf

Councilmembers Nancy Long, Eve Arber and Dan Macy attended a Mar/ 29 meeting to discuss significant issues concerning the proposed MacArthur Blvd. bike path.
The meeting took place at the County Executive Building, with representatives of the county, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, contractor A. Morton Thomas and Associates, and Glen Echo Park Ranger Sean McCabe.
The current proposal calls for the widening of MacArthur Blvd. and the addition of three-foot wide painted bike lanes on both sides of the road. At this time, the proposal only addresses the section of MacArthur Boulevard between the Goldsboro Road circle (to the east) and Route 495 (to the west).
Attendees at the meeting discussed the potential need for an environmental study, which is apparently required when National Park Service property is the subject of this type of improvement. Also discussed was whether MacArthur Blvd. would be able to support the weight of the construction equipment necessary for the road widening project, because of the aqueducts that underpin it in various locations.
Efforts to resolve these issues are an ongoing process, and the town will maintain close contact with the appropriate county personnel to ensure it is apprised of all future developments.
