Text Box: LEPRECHANS ABOUND AT
ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARTY
By Carlotta Anderson

We were all Irish at the lively St. Patrick’s Day Party arranged by former residents Kate and Jim Horwitz on Mar. 17 at the town hall. With rollicking music, plenty of corned beef and Irish whisky, and humorous limericks, participants at the event felt like part of an exhuberant Irish family celebration.
Irish jigs rocked the room as Anthony Wyatt sawed on his fiddle, impelling the otherwise staid citizens to waltz around the room.
One of the highlights was the scrumptious Irish coffee with clouds of whipped cream on top.
The limerick contest was won by Debbie Sachs with the following creation inspired by the chain link fence built around the old trolley trestle behind her Wellesley Circle home:

“There was a young woman from Glen Echo,
Who adored the view from her window.
Till she woke up one day
	To find WMATA
	Building their own baby GITMO!

Cathie Polak bought the decorations; Debbie Sachs and Jim Anderson helped set up. Everyone present did the clean-up.
This is the fourth year the Horwitz’s have arranged this annual event. Even though they moved to Bannockburn several years ago, their hearts are clearly still in Glen Echo and they are still cherished by the townspeople. Kate was already planning next year’s celebration, which will include having children bring homemade instruments to join in a performance of McNamara’s Band.

Text Box: RSVP MEANS JUST THAT

There seems to have been a gradual movement in our society to ignore the meaning of r.s.v.p, a French injunction to “respond, please.” Many town events are announced with the request to let the organizers know who is coming. Increasingly, few residents do.
At the Ladies Nights it does not pose a large problem, because the preparations are not very extensive. But it was a real problem at the St. Patrick’s Day party, because Kate and Jim Horwitz, the organizers, had to know how much food to obtain and prepare and how many tables to set up and decorate. A number of people showed up who had not said they were coming, or who called on the day of the party, which was after the preparations had been made.
On the other hand, several very thoughtful people called to say they could not come, which technically is proper in response to a r.s.v.p. invitation.
Can’t the rest of Glen Echoans do a bit better in the future?
Text Box: Children? Yes!

Several residents mentioned to the editor that they would have come to the St. Patrick’s Day Party if they had not had children. They assumed that children were not welcome at an evening party.
That was a false assumption. Children were more than welcome and there were several in attendance.
At town events, residents can assume that children are welcome unless it is specially noted that they are not.
