POST REAL ESTATE SECTION

“These Little Lots Have Gone a Long Way” was the title of the featured article about Glen Echo in the “Where We Live” section of the Washington Post on Mar. 17. It showed photos of three town homes and the interior of the Stevenson’s house on Yale Ave. with a painting by Brockie in the background.
“It was kind of in the middle of nowhere,” Nancy Long remembered of the early town where she has lived since she was six months old in 1929.
The town’s architecture was described as “an eclectic mix of Victorians, bungalows and Cape Cods, each one different from its neighbor.”
Mayor Debbie Beers recalled that the neighbors were appalled at the price she and her husband, Don, paid for their house in 1978--$70,000—because it was in terrible condition.
Among the annual events cited was the monthly Ladies Night that Eleanor Balaban described as a meeting where “We giggle and drink wine.”
Jane Stevenson mentioned that she has lived in town for 30 years and never seen a house torn down, unlike in so many neighboring communities. She pointed to the large amount of restoration being done on houses here, where “it was all chain link fences” when she arrived in 1976. Even though asbestos siding shingles still cover many of the houses, “now people know it’s wrong,” she said, and are returning “the charming old homes to their original splendor.”
