Julie and Mark McCaffrey of 6104 Harvard Ave. will be performing the the Hexagon 2007 show, “Strike While the Irony’s Hot.” The show takes place at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, 3500 R. St., NW, from March 2-24. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
Performing in this show three years ago is how Julie and Mark met, and Mark proposed on stage the last night of the 2005 show. They would love their neighbors to see the show, which is notable for original political satire and a good cause. Tickets are $20 for Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and $25 on weekends. Evening performances begin at 8:00, and Sunday matinees at 2:30. Orders are accepted at www.hexagon.org.

A green metal bench has been installed at the entrance to the Cabin John Community Center to memorialize Diane Leatherman, who was well-known and active in the Cabin John community and Glen Echo Park for many years and wrote several books. She died last year. The plaque describes her as “Activist, Author, Artist.” The bench was purchased with donations in an effort organized by her husband, Mark Leatherman, and Susan Roberts.

Raya Bodnarchuk of Harvard Ave. got a lot of local publicity last month. The Gazette depicts her standing on the Forest Glen pedestrian bridge where she has installed a series of bronze sculptures of small animals. The $100,000 art project was sponsored by the county Dept. of Public Works and Transportation an the Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council. Next Door News also featured her and her work and showed smaller versions of some of the sculptures now on the bridge.

A MacArthur Blvd. bikeway improvements meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 at the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission Auditorium, 8787 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. The plan under consideration calls for widening MacArthur Blvd. by four feet to provide three-foot wide bike lanes in both directions. The time of the meeting was not available at Echo press time. REQUESTS SIDEWALK
By Phyllis Daen

Resident Kirsten Roddy presented a request at the Jan. 8 town council meeting for the town to consider constructing a sidewalk in front of her house at 5906 Oxford Rd. The Oxford Rd. sidewalk that currently exists terminates halfway up the block because it was completed before her house was built.
The council suggested that she wait until the storm drain project is underway, because it might involve town sidewalks. In the meantime, she was told that she could choose to put in a sidewalk in front of her property on her own initiative.
However, council members mentioned that the question of whether Glen Echo Park or the town owns Oxford Rd. has not definitively been resolved, although "most everyone" says that the town owns the land. A decision is to be made within the next few months.
