Text Box: AROUND TOWN
Text Box: The gigantic inflated Santa on the lawn of the lavishly decorated 30 Wellesley Circle was featured in the Next Door newspaper last month. It shows resident Michael Bobbitt holding Willem Macy in his arms, with Michael’s dog Otello in the foreground. The photo credited Willem’s mother, Constance, with doing all the decorations at the house, “including selecting the Santa-themed mailbox.” The problem is that Constance had just dropped Willem off for Michael to baby-sit when the photographer stopped by. The reporter somehow got confused and offered to print a correction, but all involved “had a tremendous laugh about it,” says Michael, who thinks it’s a good candidate for the scrapbooks since it sounds “slightly scandalous.”

Featured in the same issue of Next Door was another Glen Echo resident, pop-up book artist Carol Barton. A profile of her described her latest work, The Pocket Paper Engineer, a how-to book on pop-up design and construction, which she worked on while teaching children in Brazil as an artist-in-residence with the Sacatar Foundation. A resident of Yale Ave., Carol did pop-up illustrations of Glen Echo for the July 2005 issue of National Geographic. They will soon be on view in a display case at the Glen Echo Town Hall.

The Irish Inn at Glen Echo was reviewed in the Dec. 13 issue of the Gazette. The article relates how owner Christy Hughes grew up poor in Ireland, one of eight children. His older sister Margaret immigrated to the U.S. and opened a restaurant, where Christy learned the business. He began by working at The Dubliner, an Irish pub in D.C., then opened two Ireland’s Four Provinces restaurants before renovating the 72-year-old tavern in Glen Echo that became The Irish Inn at Glen Echo in 2003. The paper said it has “all the trappings of a good local watering hole—attentive, authentic Irish barkeeps, live acoustic music on Monday nights and a hearty pub menu that tops out at $15.”

The Christmas season saw many houses in town beautifully decorated with lights hanging from rooflines and around trees. But the view at Vassar Circle and Cornell was truly astounding. The Springuel family had outlined the entire house, roof, and windows with white lights and the fence in red. All the trees and bushes were sketched by strings of lights and there was a star atop one of them. It was a wonderland..
