The new superintendent of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, David Vela, is expected to attend the Glen Echo Town Ccouncil's September meeting.
Mr. Vela is relocating from Austin, Texas, where he was the superintendent of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. He began his new duties here in late June.

The crowds weren't as large as expected at the July 1''Then and Wow Day'' at Glen Echo Park, according to Site Manager Kym Elder. She suggested that the attendance was probably smaller than anticipated because the event occurred during the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Candy Corner is coming back, but not in the same location. Its foundation
has been moved eight feet toward the pottery area to afford a better view of the Chatauqua tower. The park service is also moving ahead with plans for permanent exhibit in the Candy Corner that will focus on the segregation issues at the Park in the late 1960s, Ms. Elder said.

The park's maintenance shed suffered so much damage during the electrical fire in May that it will be torn down and rebuilt. The goal is to have a new one built in the same location within 18 months. Ms. Elder said there are no current plans for a public meeting on the new structure, but that one will be scheduled once plans start to be drawn up.
