Text Box: BIOBLITZ RESEARCHERS FOUND
1,000 SPECIES IN POTOMAC GORGE

In what the Gazette called a “huge, ecological scavenger hunt,” over 100 biologists and naturalists converged on the Potomac Gorge area for 30 hours in late June to see how many different species they could discover.
Sponsored by the Nature Conservancy, with Glen Echo Park as the base camp, the scientists fanned out to fields, streams, forests and rivers, focusing on invertebrates. They ended up finding over 1,000 species, including lots of beetles, flies and butterflies, 69 types of fungi, 31 land snails, 14 mosses and 4 crayfish.
The information will help the Conservancy and the National Park Service determine how best to protect the species that live in the Potomac Gorge. The Gorge is considered one of the most biologically significant natural areas in the eastern United States, according to the paper.
