Text Box: DISCOVERY CREEK MAY BUILD
BEHIND POOL FAÇADE
By Sophie Keefer

The Glen Echo Park Foundation is exploring allowing Discovery Creek to build a new building behind the Crystal Pool façade.
Mayor Beers reported to the council last month that at the last park board meeting she was one of two members who voted against this project because she believed that the park could become overcrowded. Other than the mini-golf course, the site in question is the only free area left, she said.
The mayor expressed a concern that the park is a public/private partnership and therefore not subject to Sunshine or Freedom of Information laws. In fact, she was reprimanded by the park for discussing something that happened at a meeting, and sshe was threatened with removal from the board.
Although board meetings are unofficially open to the public, many decisions are made at committee meetings, she said, to which the public does not have access as a practical matter.
Councilman Dan Macy expressed the view that as a representative of the town, the mayor was subject to public disclosure laws. Mayor Beers agreed to request an opinion from the town attorney on whether she and/or the park partnership were subject to public disclosure/access laws.
